Happy Holidays, Kargu!

jasjuliet:

Here’s another character sketch I owed for a donation to Soulless-Sasstiel! The person requested Mako, and since it’s Halloween, well…Thanks again for helping her out!

(We get the Bat-Mako joke all the time, but…this seems more his speed. I mean come on, Mako, is that your mask or your eyebrows?)

Korra because I haven’t doodled her in forever; also, I enjoy drawing curled up people.

Isaia requested my version of Bolin and Mako’s parents.

So I was thinking and thinking and noticed that a lot of the artwork I’ve seen for their parents tended to give me these happy vibes. Like, I look at them and I can tell that they were/are in love and it got me thinking about… man, way back in middleschool, my writing class was asked to give these oral reports about how our parents got together and a good 90% of the class reported that their parents… actually did not like each other when they first met. Or even the 5th time they met.

Also people seem to love the idea of the parents being probenders. Which is great, and I love the idea too, but for this exercise’s sake, I decided to take things in another direction. And the first thing that came to mind was that maybe the parents weren’t well off. Maybe Mako learned his early lessons about how to cook, save and clean from his parents. Or maybe he learned it in self defense because his parents knew jack about saving.

So Mom is a hostess. She sleeps in the day, wakes crankily at night to ply assholes with drink until they give up all the contents of their wallets and then toddle home to their irritated wives. Dad is a dice roller. Kinda goofy, doesn’t know how to work out properly so he has a nicely developed guns and chest, but chicken legs. He thinks she’s standoffish and above herself. She thinks he’s loud, annoying and short.

But one night, after drinking far too much, she staggers out back to puke in an alley and she hates life so damn much, this job is clearly a dead end, she’s never going to be a dancer/singer… and he’s there smoking. He comes over and helps hold her hair back so she doesn’t get vomit in it. At that moment, when she’s wiping her face off and he’s waiting patiently for her to be done so they can both get back to their work, she thinks “He has warm hands. That’s very kind of him. I’m totally never going to sleep with him.” And he thinks, “She’s really pretty, even with vomit on her face.”

They don’t fall in love, but they do warm up to each other slowly and over time, she realizes he’s the best chance she’s got at hooking up with someone that isn’t either in a gang, or crazy. He thinks she looks even prettier without vomit on her face — even if she is a bit of a bitch. He kinda likes that she doesn’t mince words — her social awkwardness is kind of endearing in a rabid fox sort of way. Also, he’s getting too old and his parents are nagging him to get married already, dammit, and is ready to set him up with some girl he doesn’t like. They both think, “Hey, there’s nothing wrong with getting married with a friend, right? That’s already a step up from all those couples who don’t even like each other.” So they go for it, setting aside an afternoon to figure out a prenup. All their friends think they’re mercurial and crazy, but throw them a monster party anyway.

Living together isn’t easy, but over time, between fights and their inability to keep accounts properly, Mom goes out with friends and she listens to them complain about their boyfriends/husbands. As they spin out one horror story after another, she thinks to herself, maybe, just maybe, she really lucked out because damn her husband was nothing like the assholes her friends are all hooked up with. He’s a good man.

Months later, she’s vomiting into their brand spanking new bathroom with an actual private toilet (vs a communal one that they had at their old shitty place) at 4 in the morning, and he’s crawled out of bed to help her hold her hair back. And she’s worried, she’s sick or dying or something and his hands are warm. So she slips out with, “You’re the best. You know I love you, right?” He doesn’t laugh at her or say anything, though he gifts her with flowers later that day. A week later, at the doctor’s they discover she’s pregnant.

This time it’s her turn to hold his head while he keels over and nearly brains himself on a table. And it’s then that he finally tells her that he loves her too. They spend the next hour blissed out and holding each others hands until the nurses have finished making sure Dad isn’t more than a bit concussed and kicks them out to go home.

7.65 months later, Mako is born.

The end.

best ever

I’ve barely had time to post any art lately, but here’s a WIP of my (albeit late) submission for Korroh Week, day one; ocean.

http://www.facebook.com/AdultAvatarAang

Please give this group a look. There are many like this, but this one seems to be one of the more popular ones, and thus the most disconcerting. (is this a pointless endeavor to ask them to change? Yes, probably, but the point is, I want to make sure the artists I respect are aware of it)

On the surface, it is a group that seems to be RP-ing and promoting Avatar fanart.

But when you look at the actual uploads, MANY of them are not credited at all. I have even seen a few cases where art has been manipulated, and then uplaoded, and the uploader acts like they own it, and they made it.

It is offensive to me, as an Avatar fan who has worked with so many of you lovely artists out there, and it is quite hurtful to me to see your art slapped around with no credit given. Even if it’s just laziness, and not malicious, I think it is insensitive and hurtful to you amazing people who draw lovely stuff.

I even saw an SRU artwork uploaded with no context or credit provided. This really upset me. I spent some time yesterday and today looking at some of these groups’ galleries and providing links to the original uploads when no user name/signature was available, and no credit was given. Then I received this post on my wall.

(You can see the actual post and my response here.)

I was still adding links to help promote the artists, simply stating “Artist Credit” and providing a link (I do not see how this is spam) and I was banned from posting in the group immediately after, without even a response. Very rude, if you ask me. (the group’s own profile picture doesn’t even have any kind of credit)

I’d like to think that some of them at least ASK first, but even so, it doesn’t make it any less rude to not give credit where it’s due.

And no, it didn’t look like 90% to me, because I’m sorry, but a teeny-tiny signature that is not legible does not COUNT as artist credit. Even if it’s technically OK, it is still RUDE, is the point. When you’ve got a group of 4,000 people following your page, show some common courtesy to the artists, eh?

I have even seen cases where artwork was cropped so that the artist’s signature was cut out. THAT is low. (I do not think THIS particular FB group has done that, BUT I have seen it) I know this even happens on Tumblr, where people steal art and just post it rather than reblogging the original, but at least then I USUALLY see people include a source link these days. (the links I posted giving artist credit even seems to have been removed because I was banned from the group)

Either way, at the VERY least, whether you take issue with this or not, I think all Avatar fan artists should be aware of this, and should be including a pronounced and easily visible signature of some sort on any of their art, if only for their own sakes. I’m sure these are all just teenagers having fun role-playing (two or three them replied, “I just found these on Google”), but a simple tweak in how they are doing it would result in an act of rudeness becoming a gesture of support for the artists.

At the VERY least, you artists could possibly garner new fans, and your art DESERVES to be seen!

(in the process of writing and sending this blog post out, I HAVE noticed a few pics I had commented on where my comment had been removed, a credit link had been added in the description, so that’s something…hopefully I’ve helped them be more mindful of this, but I just wanted to spread awareness of this problem, I love you artists and hate seeing you not get the credit you deserve)

I believe I saw Viria and Minuiko art on there…

BRILLIANT

Bust sketch, based off of Korra’s cousins per request of the commissioner.

Lin ruffles the boy’s hair as he bends the metal warily.

His eyes might’ve been lighter than Bolin’s, but perhaps this was how it felt to have a son.

commissioned piece for kyuubi1010; Lin and Bolin after training.

Trying my hand at an older!cop!Mako. Quickie doodle between commissions.

Did you know that jasjuliet has not drawn Mako after episode 3? For reasons?

Can’t stay mad at the guy forever, so here’s something of an apology to Mako for despising him during 88% of the season.
